No Tweed Ride for 2015 : Seeking Sponsor

Every year Bikes Without Borders and their hard working dedicated volunteers put into motion the plan for the Toronto Tweed Ride.  Alas, in 2015 we are sad to announce we will not be able to organize the ride.   This year, the ride has run into some set-backs and we have decided to defer the 2015 Ride until 2016 pending a new official corporate sponsor relationship. Aside from the monumental grass roots support we get from the Toronto cycling community, the ride is ultimately dependent on our big corporate sponsor.  For many years the great folks down at ING Direct and more recently Tangerine have generously supported the ride with direct funding and a group of amazing volunteers. Sadly sometimes great things and great relationships have to end.  Tangerine has decided to refocus their support on other worthy charitable initiatives.  We would would like to thank Tangerine for their support of the 2014 ride. Bikes Without Borders is seeking an official sponsor relationship for the Tweed Ride. Interested parties should contact: tanya@bikeswithoutborders.org

The after party at Firkin on King

FirkinOnKing_LogoAs is tradition, the Tweed Ride ends with a smashing party in the evening where riders will have a chance to unwind and share the celebration of the day! There are a few differences from prior years for this year's party that veteran riders should be aware of.

First off, the location has changed for 2014. In former years the fabulous Dovercourt House has hosted the Tweed Ride party with roaring success and in future years returning the Dovercourt House may be a possibility. But for this year, the amazing Firkin on King has stepped up to the task and is providing space in their basement area right downtown on the historic King street strip. Unlike many of the Firkin pubs that have undergone a great re branding referencing a sort of "brit-pop, post punk feel", the King Street location has retained it's heritage style as befits the magnificent building it resides in.

Also of importance, it should be noted that also unlike former years, dinner is not included with your registration price. To be totally transparent, Bikes Without Borders simply did not have the budget to provide dinner for registrants this year. However, we have negotiated with the Firkin to have an affordable dinner and drink special for our riders.

BUT! There will be entertainment and of course the prize give aways will be announced including ride prizes and a silent auction with some great donated goodies to bid on. All proceeds of course go to Bikes Without Borders.

10682138_10154504641155214_1002489796_nPrizes you and an auction you say? Indeed! While prize donations are still coming in, we're please to say that our friends down at Steam Whistle are kicking in some great Bike Caddies and cases of beer. We also have Craft Brand Co. donating micro brew goodies as well as other donations in the form of bike themed sterling silver jewelry, art pieces and more!

To entertain everyone during the party we have electro-swing DJ Amanda Raygun coming in to spin for a few hours with her incredible meld of modern beats with classics from the jazz age. So make sure after the tea you jump on the second ride that will eventually bring you to the Firkin on King for a grand old time. Here's a mix of what you might expect from Amanda!

One more thing! Bike Parking! Again due to our budget, we're not able to provide the bike valet service, but we have scouted the Firkin on King area and have determined that there is ample ring posts and bike parking areas both on Spadina and on both sides of King street. Finding parking should not be a problem.

The address of the Firkin on King is 461 King St. West. The party will be held in the Basement area.

Steam Whistle is on board!

chromeWe're pleased to announce that Steam Whistle brewery is kicking in as a sponsor of the Toronto Tweed Ride in conjunction with our friends down at the Firkin on King.

Steam Whistle has always been a brew that likes bikes and aside from a special price on draft at the pub for tweed riders, they are also throwing in a couple of beer caddies as door prizes. As soon as we have pics of these fab prizes, we will share.

bikestation2In the mean time, check out these amazing public bike installation stations they have down at the brewery. If you are near the roundhouse, know that if you need some air or whatnot, these stations are available for the roving cyclist.

Good on ya Steam Whistle and we welcome seeing you at the Toronto Tweed Ride September 20th.

The 2011 Toronto Tweed Ride

Video and Photos from the 2011 Toronto Tweed Ride

This past Saturday was Toronto's first Tweed Ride.

It was immensely successful (we estimated about 200 people showed up) and this will be an annual event. We kept hearing again and again how much fun everyone had and how they can't wait until next fall when we do it all again (and hopefully bigger and even better).

The best part is the event raised over $10,000 for the fantastic work that Bikes without Borders does, which is currently sourcing and buying bicycles and bicycle ambulances for health workers in Malawi.

If you missed the event (or even if you were there, looking dashing and lovely in your tweedy best), you're probably interested in seeing videos and photos from the event. This post is for you.

Let's start with a great video put together by Xander of 416CycleStyle: Tweedride Toronto on Queen St.

The next video is also from Xander... of the massive tall bike (complete with propeller) on the ride. :) It has a funky soundtrack, that somehow mashes Tweed with the 1970s. haha.

After the ride, we all stopped at Dovercourt House (on Dovercourt, north of Bloor) and parked our bikes at the BikeValet provided by the Toronto Cyclists Union and Autoshare, and proceeded to have dinner and a swinging 2-floor party.

Here's a video of Tweedsters and Swing Dancers cutting a rug to "Sly Blue", a swing band from NYC.

Finally, there are hundreds and hundreds (maybe thousands) of photos out there of the absolutely astounding fashion on the ride. Here's a few from our TweedRideTO Flickr Group:
