Pennsylvania cyclists joined Recycle Bicycle, PA Walks and Bikes and Ride of Silence Harrisburg and at a press conference on Tuesday, June 19th on the front steps of the State Capitol in Harrisburg to address the impact red light running and reckless driving has on cyclists and pedestrians and to call for the expanded use of red light cameras in the state. To encourage safer streets and address the issue of preventable deaths on Pennsylvania roadways, bicycle safety advocates displayed 21 ghost bikes painted white to represent the individuals that were killed.

According to the most recent data from Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, 21 bicyclists were killed in 2010 on Pennsylvania road ways — a five year high. Almost 40 percent were in an intersection, a rate this is 21 percent greater than the national average. In addition, 1,483 bicyclists were injured. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 618 pedestrian and cyclists were killed and 32,885 were injured nationwide in 2010.
